IRC logs of Libera.Chat #BZFlag for Friday, 2025-10-31

bryjenDoes fastmap use the normal game port?  I tried it and it seemed to hang.00:02
bryjenI had some machinery set up to auto generate the cache file to be served by apache, but I've not got that open to the outside world right now.00:04
bryjenAh, bzfs crashes.  undefined symbol.  I bet my plugins don't match the bzfs I'm running.00:09
bryjenthat's got it.00:29
bryjenI'm a little disappointed that in CTF mode it just puts the bases on the ground in the corners.  Probly most straight-forward thing to do though00:30

Optic_DelusionI remember jeff explaining the _maxBumpHeight problem like this. First, it never seems to happen between two BZWorld-defined objects, only with meshes. Seems to happen most often at the transition between a BZW-defined object and a mesh.  I was having the problem driving between a mesh and a base that appeared to have no "bump" at all. ...Some players would have no problem with the transition, others would get stuck.03:26
Optic_DelusionHe called it a "floating point" bug. Each CPU (or FPU) may have a different way of calculating decimals.  Given the same formula, one processor might come up with the answer of 21.0000, while another might reach the conclusion 21.000103:33
Optic_Delusionhappens most often with BZW bases, teleporters and arcs.  I'm not positive, but I think a BZW box object is really a sphere calculated to have six flat sides, which means pi is in the calculation somewhere 03:45

Optic_DelusionI remember testing that, and i could get two processors to produce  /saveworld s of same BZW object to produce slightly different results. 03:50
Optic_Delusionit was always hard to get straight answers from Trepan, but he seemed to indicate that more decimal places may be used during world generation, but when it comes time to display that object, everything is truncated to four decimal places. Rounding or no rounding?  Again, this is something I am not positive about.  03:55
Optic_DelusionBut bryjen, it's more of a client problem than a server problem. Your client with it's CPU (and the cpu's FPU), may have a problem with that bump, but my client will have no problem.03:59
Optic_Delusionmaybe03:59
Optic_DelusionMake an arc and put a teleporter on it's top. Players will get stuck.04:13
bryjenTurned out there was a work-around of sorts built into bzwgen.  It has an option to mark the sidewalks as drive-thru.05:01
