IRC logs of Freenode #BZFlag for Monday, 2019-03-04

blast007glxinfo | grep -i 'opengl renderer'   gives me    OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Mobile IntelĀ® GM45 Express Chipset00:00
blast007what linux distribution/version are you running?00:02
War_PigMint, latest00:03
blast007which one?  there's three variants of the main one, plus a debian edition00:04
War_Pigglxinfo says: OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Mobile IntelĀ® GM45 Express Chipset x86/MMX/SSE200:05
War_PigLinux Mint 18.3 Sylvia...00:06
blast007what desktop environment?00:09
blast00718.3 comes in either Cinnamon, KDE, MATE, or Xfce00:10
blast007(19.1 is the latest Mint, btw)00:11
War_PigI think this is Xfce.  Do you know how I can tell?00:35

War_Pigblast007: sorry, crashed00:41
blast007aptitude search ~i~nxfce00:41
War_Pigreturns nothing00:42
blast007try with cinnamon instead of xfce00:42
War_Pigok00:42
War_Pigshould I dist upgrade?00:42
blast007I'm doing a build of 2.4.18 on Mint 18.3 Cinnamon on this laptop00:43
War_PigCinnamon is the winner00:43
blast007working here00:44
blast007tried with a clean config?     mv ~/.bzf ~/.bzf.bak00:45
War_PigI originally installed from the repository, dont remember the version. I then built 2.4.18 and did a 'make install'.  I'll try moving the config00:47
War_Pigno difference..  fwiw, it looks like the stuff might be there.. it's just VERY VERY thin00:49
War_PigI cannot tell which base is which, I cannot see team flags (but I can see regular flags OK,)00:50
blast007what resolution are you running at?00:51
War_PigLooks like 1440x900 in the game00:52
blast007looks like that laptop comes with either a 1440x900 or a 1920x1200 panel00:52
War_PigShould I try a lower resolution?00:52
blast007k, hmm.. was thinking it might be the higher of the two and was just high pixel density00:53
blast007you could00:53
blast007we should probably use dots instead of X's for the flags, and solid shapes instead of outlines for the bases00:53
War_Pig1280x800 is no different.00:56
War_Pig640x480 no different00:58
War_Pigand damn ugly00:58
blast007had you removed the Mint repository version of bzflag before you 'make install'ed the compiled one?01:02
War_Pigno01:02
blast007you should01:03
blast007maybe you're not even running the version you compiled01:03
War_PigIt says 2.4.18 when I run it.01:04
blast007or the one you compiled may be using the files from the repository version01:04
War_PigI'll get rid of it all, and start from scratch.  How to I uninstall the compiled version?01:05
blast007sudo make uninstall01:05
War_Pigrepository version was 2.4.2, fyi01:13
blast007the newer mint would have 2.4.1201:17
War_PigNice.  Maybe I'll do the dist upgrade if nothing else works.01:19
blast007that's still old, though, but at least it would be able to connect to the list01:20
blast007I guess 2.4.14 is the only version since then with any significant changes01:23
War_Pigcleaning done, compiling now01:24
macsformeallejo: is there a homebrew package for SDL 1.2 that works on Mojave? I don't think their latest official release compiles on Mojave, but supposedly their development code does01:49
macsformeis it just brew install sdl --HEAD?01:51
SgeoI assume modding BZFlag to support VR would be a bad idea? Being able to look around without turning the tank would be cheating?02:19
*** War_Pig <War_Pig!~jim@c-73-91-97-249.hsd1.fl.comcast.net> has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving)02:23
blast007yeah, I'd think that'd be an issue :)02:25
blast007people considered an external camera as a cheat when I had BZFlag XL back in the day, so I think VR freelook would be similar or worse02:26
SgeoCould disable being able to look around. Would risk bad VR sickness, but I'm pretty sure I'm immune to that >.>. Also maybe allowing it in Observer mode. And maybe servers that intentionally allow it? Is there room in the protocol somewhere? Like a special MOTD message?02:28
blast007I think if we did VR (and that's a big "if"), we'd either make a VR-only version of the game, or there would have to be some serious limitations on the looking around part of it.. maybe something where it's more like you're inside of a tank, and sticking your head outside of the structure just blacks out the view02:28
SgeoHmm, blacking out everywhere except forward view makes sense I guess.02:29
blast007I wonder if there's any VR tank simulators02:29
SgeoThere's a Battlezone VR game, haven't tried it though.02:29
blast007that's gonna be more arcade than simulator02:31

allejomacsforme: yea it's --HEAD. though iirc, the project needs to have support for it so it won't just magically pull down from their dev branch17:07
