blast007https://static.bzexcess.com/upload.png  I already like this better than the old UI. Browsing for additional files lets you pick multiple files, and it adds a section for each one. Planning to have some way to either copy the author/license details from the first one or a checkbox to use the same details.11:52

AgathaI had some project a while back to visualize all the images in one place. I think SpringTank is hosting it now. Anyway, one of the issues I ran into was that the license and authors were all very haphazard. I'll just throw out that it would be nice if the image "author" was connected to their bz account and the "license" was selected from one of several standard options. It would also be nice to regularize the current images to conform to this.17:25
blast007the author is who created the image, not who uploaded it17:26
blast007I believe the current site is the second generation of an image hosting system. IIRC, the first one just wrote flat file data into some licenses.txt file in each directory17:27
Agatha"the author is who created the image, not who uploaded it" <-- right, and this needs to be clearer. IIRC in the current system they are required to be the same, or at least that you have copyright to the image, but who owns what and what 3rd party use is all needs to be clearer.17:48

JunkoAkemi[m]What about resources in the public domain, is there any special considerations for uploads?19:33
JunkoAkemi[m]Or in general the specifics of how to properly provide images where one isn't the author?19:36
JunkoAkemi[m]Example: Games with public domain assets, pictures released into public domain, works done by government employees as part of their duties to government..etc19:42
JunkoAkemi[m]Such as pictures from NASA which have been released without restrictions. (Which could be used for a SkyBox.)19:43

blast007no, the current system also does not require that the uploader is the same as the author.21:34
blast007for each image, the current system asks "Author Name" and "License the author selected for this image", and then there's a separate Upload Information section at the end that asks for the name and email of the uploader.21:36
blast007Uploader Information*21:36
blast007JunkoAkemi[m]: I used to have Public Domain as a built-in option, but I removed that because too many people were confusing that for "I found it on a Google search" :P21:37
blast007Agatha: which 3rd party use are you concerned about?  The main thing people might not be doing right now is attributing the author when they use stuff.  We don't have a really good way of doing that right now, though I suppose the map author could include something in a server message.21:39
AgathaI was meaning use by a server owner in a map, which either is, or could be, 3rd-party use. E.g. if I upload an image, does that mean someone else can use it? Is bzimages allowed to host images if the image author hasn't explicitly granted a copyright? Emphatically not a lawyer, me, but I think the answers to both of these are legally 'no', but in practice we're doing 'yes'. This is probably not a problem in practice, because the community is small and no one21:52
Agatha really cares, but it's technically a weird gray area that I think should be clarified.21:52
AgathaThe question I actually cared about was figuring out who authored what, just to give due credit. There are a lot of images where the credit is some opaque initials. Or where the author (or even the uploader or license!) is "(Unknown)". Again, for practical purposes, this hasn't been a legal issue, but IMO it's something any new effort at improving the image hosting should make utterly impossible for new images (and, to the extent possible, fix for older ones).21:52
blast007Agatha: yeah, some of the "unknown" ones were really old ones before it was (correctly?) tracked22:26
blast007here's an example of a public domain one from NASA: http://images.bzflag.org/tvan%20ruitenbeek/22:28
AgathaAt least they provided a URL. http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_rec.php?id=2433 was reclassified as https://web.archive.org/web/20130508025321/http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view.php?id=57752 , from which we can see (Terms of Use) that NASA allows the image to be used freely but with attribution as the copyright holder (i.e., not Public Domain). Not to pick on them, of course—the point is this sort of confusion/inaccuracy is common.22:40
